Travel & Transport

With its rural landscapes of thick forest, rolling farmland, rivers and limited public transport and active travel infrastructure, the Forest of Dean has many unique challenges to making travel more sustainable. FODCAP is helping to coordinate work across the District to improve sustainable travel options, as well as giving residents a voice on better public transport, improved accessibility, car-share or active travel options.

Forest of Dean
Transport Action Group

Forest of Dean Transport Action Group is a local partnership dedicated to making it easier and more affordable for everyone to get around the Forest of Dean, as well as improving sustainable transport options.

It’s a forum for anyone interested in improving transport, bringing together residents, councils, and transport providers to share expertise and advocate for better connections—whether by road, rail, or bus.

Members work together collaboratively to make:

  • Better Infrastructure: Advocating for improvements to our travel networks.

  • Safer Travel Options: Promoting secure routes for walking, cycling, and wheeling to give people more freedom in how they get around.

  • Shared Solutions: Supporting initiatives to get more people using shared transport, such as buses and car sharing.

We meet quarterly, moving meetings around the Forest as well as meeting online. To join the conversation or our mailing list, contact info@fodcap.org.

Active travel simply means choosing to get around under your own steam—whether that’s walking, cycling, or wheeling—to stay healthy, save money, and reduce pollution. The Forest of Dean District Council is developing a new plan for active travel in the district. It will focus on building a better network of paths and routes that are practical and safe for all residents, helping communities to stay better connected.

An Active Travel Strategy for the District

Forest of Dean District Council:
Transitioning To Electric Vehicles

Across the Forest, there are efforts to make travel cleaner and more affordable by sharing our resources and embracing modern technology. By improving public transport and making the shift toward car-sharing and electric vehicles (EVs), we can reduce traffic and pollution.

Local projects include:

  • A Growing Charging Network: The District Council has an expanding EV charging points across the Forest in council car parks. Use Electroverse to find locations near you.

  • Try out the EV Car Club: this pioneering EV car club pilot is the first of its kind in the district. This app-based hire scheme aims to help families reduce the need for a second car, making it easier and cheaper to get around when you need a vehicle.

  • Community Power: Tidenham Parish Council has introduced a fully electric 9-seater van, available free of charge for local community groups. This simple, shared solution could help remove up to 7,000 individual car journeys from our roads every year.
